Historical Sites

Penrith is a large town acting as a regional centre for the eastern Lake District, lying just outside the National Park. En-route to and from Scotland and only 10 miles from the north Pennines. The welcoming market town is the hub of the Eden Valley and a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. As well as the wealth of walking and cycling in the area, there are a host of other things to do and places to visit.

Penrith itself  offers a good mix of unique specialist shops offering local produce, traditional shops and sophisticated arcades. With its beautiful red sandstone buildings, fascinating yards and alleyways to discover and many pleasant open spaces, Penrith is a traditional market town and remains one of the few “real” Lakeland towns not totally dominated by “gear” shops.

The town has much to offer including a lovely walk through the wooded slopes of Beacon Hill to the Beacon "Pike" Monument, which was built in 1719 of local red sandstone. This rewards you with great views over the town and Lake District fells beyond.

You should also visit the ruins of Penrith Castle that date back to the 14th century. It is set in an attractive public park where you can play tennis, bowls, crazy golf, pitch and putt or simply relax. There's also a children's playground.

When eating out in Penrith there are many excellent choices, ranging from inns with home cooking, restaurants with international cuisine, cafes and teashops. There is a local cinema in Penrith as well as a 3D cinema and range of facilities at Rheged, Europe’s largest underground building.

Penrith Leisure Centre offers swimming pools, gym, an indoor climbing wall and bowls hall.

For more information please visit Penrtih Tourist Information Centre.

For those looking to venture further afield Penrith is ideally placed to access the main Lake District towns and villages, including Keswick. Carlisle is a short trip up the M6 motorway providing access to Hadrian’s Wall country, the Pennines, and the Scottish Borders.
