Walking & Cycling near Penrith and the Eden Valley in Cumbria

The Eden Valley and the Lake District are a paradise for walkers. As well as Lake District walking, Eden also offers the limestone landscape of the Orton Fells, the beautiful River Eden, countryside and attractive villages of the Eden Valley, and is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The near by Yorkshire Dales National Park is an area for quiet uninterrupted walking. You can travel on the scenic and famous Settle-Carlisle Railway and walk from stations along the Eden Valley section of the line.
Our bed and breakfast is just 5 miles from “England’s Most Beautiful Lake”, Ullswater, which offers an array of activities include Steamer Trips, sailing, canoeing, fishing, and a host of other activities. You can also visit the beautiful lakeland villages surrounding the lake including Pooley Bridge, Patterdale and Glenridding. The area is also home to some of the finest fells in the Lake District, including of course Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield and Place Fell. Blencathra and Skiddaw are also close by to the west.
Abbey House B&B is also the perfect location from which to enjoy riding a bike over rolling terrain on quiet rural roads and bridleway tracks, and this is an exhilarating way to enjoy Eden's epic scenery. The Eden Valley and Orton Fells, spread as they are between the tougher terrain of the Lake District and North Pennines, are especially good for circular rides from Penrith.
The Coast to Coast cycle route passes through Penrith and the town has been designated Cumbria's first Cycling Hub, which means cyclists are made extra welcome and will find excellent facilities and specially designed routes starting from Penrith. There is also an excellent local cycle shop in the town.
At Abbey House we aim to make you as welcome and comfortable as possible, so we give you peace of mind with our secure cycle storage, and the offer of an early breakfast before that epic ride or climb, we will do our best to help you in any way we can. Though we ensure our accommodation is kept spotless we do not expect you to be after your hard day of adventures.
